Work started this week on building a base for surfers attracted to Thurso’s world-famous reef break.
Despite its reputation for five-star waves, especially during the autumn and spring, there are no onshore facilities at the Thurso East venue.
After years of talk and several abortive projects, Thurso Rotary Club has firmed up a funding package to enable contractors to move in next week.
Land owner, Lord Thurso has gifted the ground which is to base the single-storey, wooden-cad buildings which will house showers, toilets, a meeting room and store. An outdoor covered area will also be provided for people who come to watch the national and international competitions which are staged there. An adjoining piece of ground is to be tarred to provide a car park.
The £150,000-plus project has been spearheaded by Rotarian Kevin Sutherland who is delighted it has come together so quickly.
The retired college lecturer said: “I came up here in 1988 and there was talk then about a building for surfers and other water sports.
“It’s previously come close to happening a few times and thankfully it’s come to fruition this time to allow work to start on Monday.”
The EU-backed LEADER programme contributed £120,000 with the remainder coming from Caithness and North Sutherland Fund and the club itself.
A previous scheme by another voluntary group had earmarked ground at the end of Thurso Harbour for a watersports centre.
Mr Sutherland said discussions with local surfers and other watersports enthusiasts led to the club favouring Thurso East as the site.
He said: “Most of the big events are there and there is absolutely no facilities there for the competitors. There are at least some basic amenities in the harbour area.”
It is expected it will be up and running by springtime.
