A dozen people had a lucky escape yesterday after a tour bus left a busy Highland road, ending up on its side down an embankment.

The incident took place at around 10.25am a mile north of the Cluanie Inn on the A87 Invergarry to Skye road.

No serious injuries were reported with all 12 persons on board being successfully removed from the vehicle. One female passenger from the vehicle attended Broadford Hospital to have an arm injury checked over; however, her condition is described as non-serious.

A police spokesman said: “The incident took place on the A87 Invergarry to Skye road one mile north of the Cluanie Inn at 10.26am.

“Recovery for the bus has been arranged. All 12 persons on board are out of the bus with one female going to Broadford Hospital to have an arm injury checked over. The bus is on its side and off the road; therefore, the road is open.

“A 58-year-old man will be reported in connection with road traffic offences.”

Allan Mackinnon, who was on board a passing bus, said: “We never actually saw the bus go off the road but as we got there they were getting people out. It happened on the straight above Shiel Bridge but I have no idea how it happened. Thankfully nobody was seriously injured.”

Temperatures at Cluanie ranged from minus 3.8C to minus 2C yesterday prior to the time of the incident.

Elsewhere, icy conditions caused havoc on Skye yesterday as two vehicles went off the A87 road between the Varigall, just outside of Portree, and Sligachan.

Police issued a warning to motorists and advised: “Very icy road conditions and two cars off the road already. Take great care on this stretch this morning and slow down – road is passable with care whilst recovery is being arranged.”

No injuries were reported from either vehicle.
