Police in Invergordon are appealing for information after thieves broke into a cafe on the outskirts of the town, removing a four-figure sum of cash and starting a small but destructive fire.

The incident occurred some time between Friday evening and 8.25am on Saturday at Cafe Tomich, by the A9 close to the Highland town.

The money stolen included a large amount of charity money that had been raised by staff to aid research into Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG), a form of brain cancer.

The cafe, which closed on Saturday as officers conducted investigative works, reopened on Sunday despite the break-in.

In a statement issued on their Facebook page, Cafe Tomich said: “We are open today following an incident during the early hours of Friday night and Saturday morning when mindless, selfish individuals broke into the Tomich.

“They started a small yet intense fire and stole money some of it charity money for a local cause.

“Thanks to Police Scotland for their prompt response. Also, thank you for the messages of support from customers and friends of The Tomich. The Team are here today and look forward to serving you.”

Customers expressed their sadness at the news on the cafe’s social media page, with one, David Macdonald, stating: “Glad to see you’re open again and moving forward, I can never understand the behaviour of some people.”

Detective Constable Paul Sanderson added: “We would urge anyone who believes they may have seen any suspicious people or vehicles around the premises to come forward.

“Anyone with any information is urged to contact Police Scotland on 101.”
