Video shows visitors how to drive on single track roads in Mull

Visitors coming to Mull this summer will be advised how to drive on single track roads – before they even reach land.

When motorists drive onto the ferry at Oban, they will be handed a leaflet to help them understand the etiquette of driving on Mull’s roads.

And they have the duration of the one-hour sailing to get acquainted with the rules.

Several Mull and Iona organisations have been working together to address the need to increase visitors’ awareness about driving on the island’s roads, in addition to the existing road signs and leaflet displays.

Neal Goldsmith, from the Mull and Iona Ferry Committee, said: “It seemed such an obvious thing to do, to increase road safety and prevent frustration for locals and visitors alike.

“If every driver coming to the islands is handed the information as they board the ferry, they are much more likely to understand and adopt the rules of driving on single-track roads.”

Meanwhile, Mull Community Council were addressing the need for information for a specific sector of visiting vehicles, by providing a new Guide for Campervans and Motorhomes. Both leaflets were produced and funded by Marketing Mull and Iona (MMI).

Iain Erskine, area operations manager for Argyll and Lochaber for CalMac, who is also a resident on the island of Mull said: “We are very pleased to announce that we will support this excellent Mull community initiative. We have supported educating drivers on how to drive on island single-track roads for many years.

“Our staff will hand out the Driving on Mull leaflet to all drivers and the Guide for Campervans and Motorhomes to specific vehicles embarking for Mull which will give this a fresh approach.”

Colin Morrison, chairman of MMI said: “This initiative is a great example of how several organisations working together, taking a positive approach, can ensure the benefits of tourism are achieved. It will improve life for islanders during the busy tourist season, while providing a more enjoyable, safe and relaxed driving experience for visitors.”
