Plans for a 60-bed care facility in Orkney have been unveiled as part of a multi-million pound development.
Orkney Islands Council aim to build the £15 million centre on a piece of vacant farmland at Solisquoy Loan on the western edge of Kirkwall.
The single storey structure will be comprised of six wings with 10 living quarters, complete with on-suite bathroom, together with ancillary accommodation and activity rooms.
A planning application has been lodged by the local authority.
A council spokeswoman said: “The proposal is to replace the existing ageing care home in Kirkwall with a modern, purpose-built, 60 bed residential care home to provide high dependency care for older people in Orkney.

“The new accommodation will be designed and built to meet the requirements of current legislation and the Care Inspectorate, and cater for a high degree of physical frailty and dementia.
“It is proposed that the accommodation will follow the format of both Smiddybrae House and the plans for the replacement of St Peter’s House in that it will be organised in small wings.”
The building has been designed around two individual courtyards, to give residents access to the outdoors.
If approved, construction is expected to be completed by 2021, helping to transform the way care is delivered on the islands.
Alongside the purpose built facility, the authority has outlined plans to construct 119 houses to the west end of the land.
The development will include a mixture of single and two-storey one to four bedroom houses with additional four-in-a-block flats and detached larger properties.
The service sites will be located close to the main access on Glaitness Road, with views over Kirkwall Bay.
The social housing will be constructed by Orkney Islands Council and Orkney Housing Association Ltd.
