Legendary Highland musician Fergie MacDonald’s personal account of his father’s experiences surviving some of bloodiest military confrontations in history is a top seller across the Highlands.
Fergie’s book about his father John “Ton” MacDonald’s time serving in Gallipoli and the Somme as a member of the elite Lovat Scouts during the First World War, sold more books that any other in 2018 for Inverness publisher For The Right Reasons .
The book tells the story of Ton, who enlisted in the Territorial Army in 1914, while underage with a number of friends from the Moidart area.
The skills of many men who worked the land –such as deer stalkers – were put to lethal use in the war with Ton eventually becoming a Lovat Scout Sharpshooter.
Musician and composer MacDonald, who hails from Moidart and is best known for his accomplished accordion playing, wrote the book based on Ton’s letters, as well as remembering the stories he was told growing up.
He said: “I am delighted that my father’s story has been read and heard throughout the Highlands. It was a privilege to write it, with my friend Allan Henderson.
“For the Write Reasons is a publisher that deserves the recognition for taking my father’s story and making it into one of the most purchased book across the Highlands.”
