A Highland hotel is lending their support to a former school teacher preparing to cycle more than 1,000 miles to raise awareness of debilitating head injuries.
50-year-old Nathaniel Spring from North Berwick suffered a severe head injury whilst taking his class on a school trip to a nearby castle in 2017.
After being initially diagnosed with concussion, he began to develop post-concussion syndrome which left him unable to return to work.
With his road to recovery now under way, Mr Spring set himself a 40-day cycling challenge, which will see him travel from North Berwick to Ullapool and then travel across to the Western Isles before heading home.
Speaking of his recovery he said: “My recovery has been slow. It has taken me more than a year just to feel confident on a bike. I set myself this challenge as it gave me something to work towards. I’ll be travelling solo, exploring new places and clocking in around 20 miles each day. I’m feeling very motivated and hope that my tour inspires others to take on their own challenges. If I can do it, anyone can.”
Throughout his journey, he hopes to raise awareness of the importance of overall health and wellbeing, and encourages people to join him in their own 40-day challenge.
In support of his venture, Macdonald Hotels & Resorts will provide accommodation at various sites across the country including Macdonald Aviemore Resort, Macdonald Rusacks Hotel in St. Andrews, and Macdonald Norwood Hall Hotel in Aberdeen whilst being treated to a good nights’ rest, a hearty meal and complimentary leg massage to keep him in tip-top shape.
Lindsey Randall, general manager at Macdonald Drumossie Hotel, said: “Nat will be cycling continuously for 40-days – a challenge that would be difficult for most.
“To overcome this injury and take on such a courageous task is truly inspirational, and one that will no doubt encourage others to step outside their comfort zone for a good cause.”
