The A82 has now reopened after the Fort Augustus swing bridge suffered mechanical failure.
The Caledonian Canal crossing was closed shortly after 2pm, causing disruption to traffic in both directions.
Bear Scotland arrived swiftly on scene to rectify the problem in an effort to reopen the trunk road to motorists.
The road remained closed for around 40 minutes, before being reopen shortly before 3pm.
A spokesperson for Scottish Canals said: “Earlier this afternoon, Fort Augustus swing bridge on the Caledonian Canal suffered a mechanical failure, closing the A82 in that location. BEAR Scotland, who maintain the swing bridge, were quickly on site and were able to reopen it to road traffic after around 40 minutes.”
Motorists were being advised to use an alternative route and expect longer journey times.
