Crews standing watch after wildfire brought under control on Wester Ross coast

Fire crews battling a wildfire near to Gairloch in Wester Ross have brought the blaze under control with two crews this morning standing watch over the area to ensure the area does not reignite.

Four crews have attended the blaze, which was first reported on Wednesday evening at 10pm, with firefighters battling tirelessly for hours to bring the fire under control.

The incident occurred near to the A832 and the Kerry Falls power station, around four-and-a-half miles outside of Gairloch.

However, officials from Scottish and Southern Energy confirmed the plant remained unharmed yesterday.

A helicopter was drafted in to deploy water bombing techniques.

A fire service spokeswoman said: “The fire has since been extinguished with two crews, one from Gairloch and one from Aultbea, keeping watch over the area to ensure it does not reignite.”

The spokeswoman confirmed crews had departed in a staggered phase overnight as firefighters were able to curb the blaze.

The A832 road between Kinlochewe and Gairloch had been closed for much of the duration of the blaze, with the vital route reopening this morning following the conclusion of the operation.
