Two coastguard rescue teams and an RNLI lifeboat were earlier today sent to assist a helicopter after an emergency signal was broadcast from the aircraft.
The incident was first reported to the Coastguard Operations Centre in Shetland at 10am, with assistance sent to the Sumburgh area.
A spokeswoman said: “We received reports of a helicopter with difficulties on board that had recorded a pan-pan signal.
“We sent Lerwick coast rescue team and Sumburgh coast rescue team, alongside the Lerwick lifeboat.
“The aircraft was able to land safely with rough confirmation received at 10.30am.
“Our teams were sent as a preventative measure but were not required to provide any emergency assistance.”
A pan-pan signal is recognised internationally that somebody aboard a boat, ship, aircraft, or other vehicle is declaring that they have a situation that is urgent and requires immediate attention, Â however, does not pose an immediate danger to anyone’s life or to the vessel or vehicle itself.
The aircraft involved was not the coastguard search and rescue helicopter, Rescue 900, based at Sumburgh but is understood to be of the same model.
