NHS Highland has taken a major step forward to improve health care services in the north as they sign a deal for two new community hospitals.
Board representatives signed the £40m contract with hub North Scotland Ltd this week for the design and construction of two new hospitals in Aviemore and Broadford.
The facilities will help modernise community and hospital services in Badenoch & Strathspey and Skye, Lochalsh & South West Ross.
Deborah Jones, NHS Highland’s director of strategic commissioning, planning and performance, said: “We are delighted to achieve this significant milestone which marks the start of construction of two exciting new hospitals for the communities of Badenoch & Strathspey and Skye, Lochalsh & South West Ross.”
Construction on Badenoch and Strathspey’s centre will begin at the end of the month followed by the commencement of work in Broadford next month.
Both hospitals are scheduled for completion by Spring 2021 with Balfour Beatty appointed as the main building contractor.
She added: “This substantial investment in our estate will act as a springboard to enable the redesign of health and care services in these localities. I look forward to the construction work getting underway and to see the two new hospitals begin to take shape over the coming months.”
