Morvern Highland Games – historically branded the wettest during the Games circuit – enjoyed sunshine, its biggest ever gate and highest numbers of competitors.
From wife-carrying to the Morvern Mile, a superb day out was enjoyed in Lochaline overlooking the Sound of Mull at one of the most picturesque games fields in the Scottish circuit.
The chieftain of the games was Elizabeth “Bibby” MacDonald – local postmistress, crofter and Gaelic stalwart – who presented the trophies and awards.
A small team of four people organise the annual games, with more than 80 track and field events for children and heavy weight competitions.
They even had a streaker, albeit a toddler escaping from his mum and joining in with the track races.
Highland dancers from Morvern took to the stage accompanied by Mull and Iona Pipe Band.
There were a good number of stalls, including a first taste of the whisky to be distilled from the Ncn’ Ean Distillery at Drimnin.
Megan Whyte, one of the organisers said: “it was a simply one of the best games that anyone can remember, and everything went very well.
“People from all over the world joined in with all the activities, some people attending a Highland games for the very first time.
“People kept coming all day, and there were more and more competitors coming forward to sign up for events.
“There was a good number of heavies taking part in the competitions.”
Lisa Gascoigne, who was organising the field events, said: “It must be one of the most spectacular games fields in the whole of Scotland, and we were able to enjoy it in the lovely bright sunlight.”
Organiser Riona Whyte added: “A huge thank you to all our sponsors, advertisers, Morvern Community Trust, Ardtornish Estate, Lochaline Quartz Sand and all our volunteers.”
