Inverness firefighters are helping young people learn how to work as a team through an “inspiring” new programme.
The Fire Skills scheme allows young people between the ages of 12 and 17 to take part in hands-on sessions which have been adapted from real-life firefighter drills.
The programme has been brought forward to help improve youngsters’ inner confidence whilst enhancing their team-building skills.
Local senior officer, Rab Middlemiss, said: “We are dedicated to engaging with, working with and inspiring our young people.
“Initiatives like the Fire Skills programme allow young people to experience what it means to be a firefighter, whilst enjoying a fantastic experience, meeting new people and learning valuable safety advice and employability skills.”
During the sessions – which are held at Inverness Airport – participants take part in hose running, pump drills, ladder climbing, road safety, first aid and community safety lessons.
Firefighter Ali Chisholm said: “We were delighted to see the youngsters leaving with a sense of accomplishment and success. We hope their short time with us will have built their confidence, self-discipline, communication and team-work skills.”
Andrea MacDonald, Inverness Airport’s fire manager, said: “We are delighted to be involved in the development of young adults within the Highlands and Islands. The aim is to enhance the confidence of those taking part, as well as showcasing the emergency services as a fantastic career path.”
