Police and Coastguard search for missing man in Argyll loch after boat capsizes

A full scale search of an Argyll loch is underway after a boat capsized on Saturday afternoon.

Police confirmed that three men were on the boat, and that two have been rescued from Loch Awe, the third largest fresh water loch in Scotland.

Police are continuing to co-ordinating efforts on the loch to search for the missing man, believed to be a visitor to the area.

It is understood as many as 10 vessels are out searching around the Kilchurn Castle area, on Saturday with the Coastguard helicopter and ground teams on site.

Eye witnesses saw two men being winched to safety from an island on Loch Awe.

A Police spokeswoman said: “About 4.40pm on Saturday afternoon we received a call about a boat capsizing in the Loch Awe.

“Police, Fire and the Maritime and Coastguard Agency attended following report that a boat with three men on board.

“Two men managed to get to safety on a nearby island and they were taken to Oban hospital where their condition is described as stable.

“The search for the third man continued until 10pm last night when the search was called off due to fading light.

“The search will resume today.”

A Coastguard spokeswoman said: “HM Coastguard are currently assisting the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and Police Scotland with in responding to a capsized boat with three people on board near Inshail Island, Loch Awe.

“Two people were reported to have got themselves to safety, but a third was unaccounted for.

“Oban and Inveraray Coastguard Rescue Teams, Appin Inshore Rescue Team and HM Coastguard search and rescue helicopter based at Inverness have been sent to the scene to assist in carrying out a search for the missing person, along with Police Scotland and Scottish Fire and Rescue Service.

“The two other people are in the care of the police and ambulance service

“The search is ongoing and there’s no further information at this stage. ”
