Friends and family of Linda Norgrove prepare for annual charity run

Altnaharra-born aid worker Linda Norgrove was killed in Afghanistan in 2010.
Altnaharra-born aid worker Linda Norgrove was killed in Afghanistan in 2010.

Friends and colleagues of Linda Norgrove will take part in a run in her memory this weekend – from wherever they are in the world.

The annual run officially takes place on the Valtos Peninsula in Lewis, with participants completing a 10K circuit through the rolling landscape and untouched beaches.

But over the years, Linda’s loved ones living further afield have also got involved – from colleagues in Washington to former university friends in Antarctica.

It is one of the main fundraising activities for the Linda Norgrove Foundation, with money raised going straight towards funding scholarship programmes in Afghanistan.

This year’s event will take place on October 5.

Linda’s mother, Lorna, said: “We’ve had 60 to 100 people taking part in the past and encourage people from around the world to join us.

“We’ve had so many friends around the world get involved.

“Some of Linda’s friends who studied with her at Aberdeen University joined us from Antartica. They could only run 100 metres as it was so cold.

“We’ve had people in Neymar, Australia, New Zealand and Canada join in too. It’s nice that so many people remember her by doing our run.

“People from the organisation she worked for also do a fundraiser and raise a lot of money for us – they do a 5K walk/run in the park in Washington and mocktails.”

The Lewis event begins at noon. Participants can run or walk the course and are encouraged to send in photographs from wherever they have taken part.

T-shirts are available to help raise awareness of the charity. To find out more, visit www.lindanorgrovefoundation.org/get-involved/events/2019-10k.
