TV naturalist to host talk in Highland Capital

A famous face from TV will be in Inverness next month teaching the art of rewilding.

TV naturalist Nick Baker, who has appeared in well-known series such as The Really Wild Show and Autumnwatch, will share his passion for flora and fauna, and pass on how to become more connected to nature than ever before.

Commenting on the upcoming talk, which is part of the Royal Scottish Geographical Society’s Inspiring People series, Nick said: “We are filling our ears with buds and not birds, dazzling our eyes and sizzling our optic nerves with back-lit LED screens and not butterflies.

“As a species we are undoubtedly in big trouble. As we become further and further disconnected from nature, we lose sight of its true value.

“We are also facing a time where the incidences of obesity and disease relating to inactivity are at an all-time high, as are mental disorders and stress related illness all of which it has been proven can be alleviated by simply spending time in green, if not wild spaces.”

Nick’s talk entitled Self Rewilding is a talk about how to find a sense of belonging in the world. How to reinvigorate, restore, rethrill, rezest, resense, reincentivise and rejoy, while at the same time finding a bona fide thrill in an ever increasingly anthropogenic world.

Mike Robinson, Chief Executive of RSGS added: “At RSGS, we inspire an interest and better understanding of the natural world – from the very smallest creatures to the biggest landscapes. To have Nick speak for us is a great pleasure and a wonderful addition to our talks programme – we look forward to hearing his enthusiastic stories from a lifetime of animal adventures.”

Nick will speak at Highland Council Chamber, Glenurquhart Road, Inverness, on Monday, November 11. The talk starts at 7.30pm and tickets are available via Eventbrite or on the door.
