Motorists in Wick are being warned to expect delays today and tomorrow as huge towheads are hauled from Wick harbour to Subsea 7’s fabrication yard at Wester, near Keiss.
They are part of the contract the company is completing for Equinor as part of the expansion of its Snorre field in the Norwegian sector of the North Sea. The towheads are to link up with three sub-sea pipeline bundles being constructed at Wester.
The movements, escorted by police, are scheduled to leave the harbour between 9am and 9.30am and snake through the town before continuing on the A99 towards the yard.
A Subsea spokesman said yesterday: “We hope to complete the operation by Wednesday but exact timings will depend on weather conditions and how the police direct proceedings but based on previous experience the towheads will take between two to three hours to reach Wester.
“As usual, due to the extreme width of all the structures we require the route, identified by cones, to be clear of all cars and other vehicles.”
