A 12-year-old Caithness youngster has raised more than £400 to help Scotland’s animals by completing a 10-mile hike.
Catriona Irwin organised the sponsored walk last month in honour of the Scottish SPCA to help make a difference to the lives of animals across the country.
The aspiring youngster set off on her journey from Loch More towards Altnabreac alongside her mum Elizabeth and their beloved dog Honey on Sunday, November 17; however, freezing conditions and ice forced them to change their plans as daylight began to fade.
Determined to complete her challenge in one day, they walked back to Harpsdale before being met by her dad and little sister at Westerdale.
Catriona said: “I wanted to raise as much money as possible for my local Scottish SPCA centre and hopefully make a difference to an animal’s life.
“I contacted the charity to get all the information I would need and named my walk ‘Honey’s Highland Hike’ after our dog who was coming with us on the hike.”
Her efforts raised a total of £460 through sponsored forms and her fundraising page.
Christine Urquhart, assistant manager of our Caithness and Sutherland Rescue and Rehoming Centre, said, “We think that Catriona’s efforts are incredible.
“She’s shown real determination and initiative, not only in organising everything herself, but by completing the hike despite the challenging weather conditions.
“This was an amazing challenge to take on and we’re extremely grateful to Catriona for her support of the Society as we rely solely on the generosity of the public to help us care for abused, abandoned and neglected animals each year.”
