Oban Lifeboat was launched after a work boat in the Sound of Mull sent out a digital selective calling alert.
A DSC alert is a means of sending digital messages using a vessel’s VHF radio and is often used to call for assistance in an emergency situation.
The coastguard called the lifeboat out after an alert was picked up just after midnight on Monday.
A search of the area was carried out. Craignure Coastguard Rescue Team also performed a search from the shore and discovered a workboat tied up to pontoon in Scallastle Bay.
Nobody was aboard the vessel and it was agreed that it was a false alarm.
The lifeboat stood down and returned to Oban where it was made ready for service again by 2.20am.
