Council officials have raised more than £6,000 for the Highland Hospice.

The independent charity relies entirely on public donations to help cover a population of more than 230,000 people across the north – the equivalent of the size of Belgium – with £7,000 worth of donations needed each day just to keep running.

In the run-up to the festive season, the Highland Council pledged their support for their cause by holding a number of fundraising initiatives including a raffle, a bake sale, coffee morning and a panto.

Hospice corporate fundraiser Lisa Long was presented with a cheque worth £6,879 at the council’s headquarters on Glenurquhart Road.

Mrs Long said: “We are so grateful to Highland Council for running this incredible Christmas Raffle for Highland Hospice. They have raised more this year than ever before, and this money will be used to support our Highland community when they most need us. Thank you so much to everyone at Highland Council who bought tickets, and to Alison Gilbert, Lorna Bailey and their teams who worked so hard to raise these funds.”

The donations were raised through the local authorities Staff Charity Fund to help provide financial relief to the highland organisation.

Highland Council’s Lorna Bailey added: “We are absolutely thrilled with the amount of money raised for this extremely worthy cause through the generosity of our staff, members and those who have donated prizes for the raffle. We have already commenced planning for next year to ensure our collections for this vital service continue in future years.”
