A group of north teenagers will travel to former US president Barack Obama’s old school in Hawaii to learn how to make the world a better place.
Three senior pupils from Kingussie High School will visit the Punahou School in Honolulu for a programme which aims to “develop young leaders” by teaching them about global challenges and how to make a difference to society.
The pupils are the only ones invited from Scotland to participate in the two-week summit in July.
They will get involved with workshops, discussions and field trips which explore topical themes such as water security and sustainability, energy, health, food, conservation and peace.
This year there will be a special emphasis on mental health and nutrition as well.
Their teacher, Rachel Richards, will accompany them to the Global Leadership Summit.
She said: “This is an honour for the school and for the local community.
“On their return to Kingussie, they will implement a sustainable project during S6, helped and supported by other attendees, teachers and business leaders through online discussions.
“Our three students have had to demonstrate their academic ability, confidence and organisational skills.
“They will stay at Kingussie High School until the end of S6 to realise their potential and enable them to see their project through to fruition.
“They are fine representatives of the school, the local community and Scotland.”
The teacher also asked for local firms to get behind the school’s aspirations to send more children to the conference in years to come.
She said: “Without the support of local businesses, our already selected 2021 and 2022 teams will not be able to participate within this prestigious programme, as we do not have any teachers in a position to fund this for themselves.
“We are therefore seeking help. We are offering local businesses sponsorship opportunities to assist with the teacher’s travel and accommodation costs of £2,500.
“This sponsorship funding will ensure that the students are able to attend.
“The school and parent council are registered charities so donations can be tax-deductible.
“We hope that you will be able to help us promote this programme, support the school and these remarkable students, who will undoubtedly be amazing potential employees and future leaders.”
