A famous Whittington made his fortune in London, but a modern day namesake earned his money despite being unable to visit the capital.
When this year’s London marathon was postponed, Chris Whittington decided to run it anyway.
The Lewis runner completed 26.2 miles by running 218 laps of the church car park near his home in Point.
He completed the task in a personal best 3 hours and 47 minutes, raising more than £1,800 for cystic fibrosis charity the Leanne Fund in the process.
He said: “It was nice to be doing something worthwhile on a weekend when I would have been disappointed about not running London.
“The Leanne Fund is such a worthwhile cause and one that is clearly of great importance locally.
“I’m overwhelmed by everyone’s generosity. I couldn’t have anticipated it would raise the amount it has.”
Chris has run two marathons before – the first while on deployment in Afghanistan six years ago.
He also competed in the Marathon Hebrides last year, but said Marathon Lunainn was still a real challenge.
“What got me through was the fantastic support of a few socially distanced families that came down to cheer me on and got me to a marathon personal best,” he said.
Chrisetta Mitchell, from the Leanne Fund, added: “We are so grateful to Chris for completing this amazing challenge and raising vital funds for the fund.”
