A detective who battled economic crime in Scotland’s capital has began a new adventure in an island community.
Barra residents may have noticed the new face driving around while they’ve been enjoying their daily exercise or popping to the shops for essential groceries.
Constable Sara Hamilton recently transferred to Barra and Vatersay for a six-month summer secondment, to supplement the two permanent officers stationed there.
She traded in her usual job as a detective within Edinburgh’s Economic Crime Unit for the drastically different role.
She said: “When I applied for my secondment last summer I never imagined then that we would be faced with the challenges we are faced with now.
“All the same, I’m thrilled to get the opportunity to help the people of Barra and Vatersay as we all get through this.
“In my other role within the Economic Crime Unit I am aware that fraudsters are, even in these unprecedented circumstances, exploiting and stealing from individuals and businesses during the pandemic.
“This has included posing as a legitimate organisation and using emails, texts, telephone calls and WhatsApp messages to offer goods, services, advice or treatment for the coronavirus.”
Police and partner agencies recently launched their Shut Out Scammers campaign to highlight this issue and provide advice and guidance to the public.
