The etching of the name Ally appears to have been conducted using a black marker pen.
The beauty spot is visited by thousands each year with recent renovations enhancing infrastructure to cope with the increased footfall in the area.
Police are asking anybody with any information to contact officers on 101, or if they wish to remain anonymous, to call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
