A 32-home development in Kyleakin will go ahead, providing some “desperately needed” affordable housing for the area.
The development, by Lochalsh and Skye Housing Association (LSHA), is on green space to the south of the football pitch and south west of LHSA’s recently completed 18-home estate.
The plans include six semi-detached, four detached and eight cottage flats with a new access road.
Objections were submitted by the local community council, Kyleakin FC, the community hall and a number of households.
The concerns centred around the additional traffic generated by the development, with fears it would result in road and pedestrian safety issues.
Objections were also raised about the potential for flooding on the football pitch, but the Scottish Environment Protection Agency ruled that would not be an issue.
Planning officers at Highland Council’s north planning committee yesterday said road safety concerns would be addressed by the implementation of a one-way system around the area ensuring safer access along the narrow roads leading off Kyleside.
Local councillors John Gordon and Calum MacLeod both welcomed the addition of affordable housing for Kyleakin.
Mr Gordon said: “I welcome the addition of desperately needed affordable housing.
“The housing association has been very creative in building housing in smaller settlements, and we need more of this in villages across Skye and Lochalsh.”
Mr MacLeod said the one-way system being proposed, along with potentially creating a 20mph zone on Kyleside, was the way forward for traffic calming.
Developer contributions of £32,000 will be used for play amenities for the village, either renovating the existing playpark or creating a new one elsewhere.
