Highland Council will plough £800,000 into new lifts at a pair of north schools.
The local authority has said the installation of new lifts at Golspie High School, along with the installation of external ramps and a stairlift at Tain Royal Academy, is part of its commitment to renovate schools.
Tain councillor Derek Louden said he welcomed move at Tain Royal Academy, which he believes should have been implemented “many years ago”.
The building dates back to the 1960s and a new campus is currently being constructed.
Mr Louden said: “The issue at Tain where there are flights of steps all over the school should have been dealt with many years ago.
“The development of Tain’s new campus will provide a permanent solution to give all children equal access to all parts of the school.
“While we wait for this and hope that it is not long-delayed, we have to accept that the present position for children with mobility issues is unacceptable.
“Let’s hope this is done in such a way that the lift can be re-used when the school is eventually replaced.”
A Highland Council spokeswoman said: “The works will significantly improve accessibility and inclusion at both of these secondary schools.”
The contract has been awarded to Morrison Construction.
