Youngsters across the highland region had expected to attend school in the morning for the first time in months.
But, instead parents were informed at around 10pm that their children would have to stay at home.
It was anticipated that Wednesday would have been the first day back after schools broke up in March, due to coronavirus precautions.
However it is now understood in what one parent said was “wholly unacceptable” and “disgusting” that at least Tarbat Old Primary, Tore Primary School, Kyleakin Primary School and Kyle Primary School will all remain closed on Wednesday morning.
Tore Primary School released a statement onto their Facebook page saying: “Due to unfortunate circumstances out with our control, we are unable to open the school on Wednesday 12th August.
“The email details reasons with a letter from the Chief Executive. Please accept my sincere apologies for this late correspondence.”
In the run up to re-opening the Council had taken steps to ensure the safety of over 200 schools during the pandemic.
It is thought that as many as eight schools will remain closed tomorrow morning as a result of concerns over cleaning.
