Crofters in a north-west Sutherland village have installed two padlocked gates across the road to the local beach to try to keep out inconsiderate tourists.
Visitors have been driving the 200yds to the beach, camping around the cemetery, lighting fires and leaving litter and human waste.
Keys to the new gates are available to Scourie locals, and there is a small unlocked pedestrian gate to allow access on foot to the beach.
Resident Pete Tuck said: “They have flocked here because they can’t go abroad and a minority are not being responsible.
“There are no hotels or bars open, nowhere to eat.
“They are driving around, parking and pitching festival-style tents and lighting fires.
“They’re camping on the verges around the cemetery and using the cemetery itself as a toilet.”
Mr Tuck said fence posts had been taken and old strainer posts burned on the beach leaving six inch nails exposed on the stumps.
He said: “This environment is fragile and they are harming it.
“But today I can look over the beach and see people having picnics at the benches and swimming in the sea.
“As long as they leave no litter, they’re most welcome.”
The gate has been hailed on social media as “sad, but necessary”, “terrible that it has come to this” and “a community standing together against inconsiderate visitors”.
Another said he now had a campervan parked at the top of his road and added: “I think the gate is a great idea [but] I worry that we might be shifting the problem elsewhere.”
