A 21-year-old driver was disqualified and fined £200 after he admitted careless driving by doing 111mph on the A9.
Michael Fernie of 2 Quebec Avenue, Tain pleaded guilty at Dingwall Sheriff Court yesterday after the charge was reduced from dangerous to careless driving.
He was caught on the 70mph dual carriageway section at Artafeelie between Tore and Inverness.
Fiscal depute Stewart Maciver told the court that Fernie was spotted by police officers on a mobile patrol at around 10.45pm.
Defence agent John MacColl said: “He holds a good job as a grounds maintenance worker with Highland Council and receives £300 per week. This was an error of judgement.”
Mr MacColl urged Sheriff Noel McPartlin not to disqualify his client due to the effect that it could have on Fernie’s employment.
However, Sheriff McPartlin said he had no option and banned Fernie from driving for six weeks.
He said: “There needs to be period of disqualification to mark the gravity of the offence. Driving at that sort of speed is simply not acceptable.”
