The number of drink and drug drivers caught in the Highlands during a national summer campaign has fallen by almost a half, compared to last year.
More than 1,000 motorists were stopped and breathalysed by police in the region during the two-week crackdown.
A total of 14 people were found to be over the limit, including two who were under the influence of drugs – 10 fewer than the 24 caught during last year’s campaign.
In the first week, five motorists were found to be over the limit and two had their cars seized by the police.
In the second week, seven people were caught drink driving and two more were drug driving. Of these, four had been involved in a collision.
All 14 have been reported to the procurator fiscal.
Highland and Islands’s road policing Inspector Neil Lumsden said: “On the whole, I am really pleased with the results of the campaign. During the same period in last year’s campaign, 23 drink drivers and one drug driver were detected.
“This year we have stopped and checked more drivers and 12 have been found to be over the legal limit and two drug drivers detected.
“This represents almost a 50% reduction in the number of drink drivers detected and shows that the ‘don’t risk it’ message, along with increased enforcement activity, is having an effect.”
Across Scotland, 9,000 drivers were stopped and breathalysed during the campaign.
Anyone with information about suspected drink or drug driving should call 999 or 101 in a non-emergency, or contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
