The main trunk road through the Highlands has been closed to assess damage caused by the an accident earlier today.
An excavator being carried on the back of a heavy goods vehicle struck a bridge carrying the B817 road at Alness over the A9 Inverness-Thurso road.
While no one was injured in the accident, which happened at 3.37pm, roads contractor Bear Scotland closed the road to assess the damage.
A Bear Scotland spokeswoman said: “The A9 is closed northbound at Alness due to an excavator being carried on an HGV striking a bridge. Police are currently directing traffic through Alness and our team is onsite setting up traffic lights to allow the road to re-open shortly.”
