An earthquake rocked parts of the Highlands last night when a huge rumble was heard over a large area.
Online monitoring, on the website of the British Geological Survey, later confirmed the earthquake, which had a magnitude of 2.9 and depth of 7km (4.6 miles) hit at 6.36pm.
One resident of Corpach, near Fort William, said: “We heard a loud rumble like the roof coming off, and all our neighbours were out on the street.
“We called the police but they said nothing had been reported to them, so we just left it.
“On a local social network page, we discovered that the same loud noises were heard in Ballachulish, Onich, and Kinlochleven.
“Others said they had felt the rumble in Claggan, An Aird, and Glencoe, and were trying to work out the location of the epicentre.
“Among the other comments were ‘scary stuff’, and ‘my whole house vibrated'”.
An earlier earthquake was confirmed in Acharacle on the Ardnamurchan peninsula on Tuesday, with a magnitude of 1.3.
Acharacle is more than 35 miles from Fort William.
