The Queen’s Baton Relay will tour the Western Isles tomorrow as it continues a celebratory journey around the UK.

The baton will be flown in this afternoon and piped off the plane at Barra Airport.

The first of several community events will be held at Castlebay from 4pm-5.30pm.

A team of 60 local people will carry the baton at various points during the course of Tuesday, with events planned for Dailburgh, Liniclate, Tarbert, Lionel and Stornoway.

The relay tour is covering more than 400 Scottish communities in the run-up to the Commonwealth Games, which will start in Glasgow on July 23.

Comhairle convener Norman A Macdonald said: “The Queen’s Baton Relay in the Western Isles features 60 local baton bearers who are being recognised by their communities for the work they do in the community.

“It will be a tremendous occasion and I am delighted that we have been able to include the length of the islands and to hold community events at strategic locations.

“This is a great opportunity to showcase the islands and have a great time as well. Everyone is welcome at the community events.”

The first event on Tuesday takes place at Daliburgh School from 8.30am-10.45am, with the baton due at 9.20am.

The tour is due at Liniclate School at about 10.40am, but the festivities, including athletics events and a display from Uist Riding School, will be running from 10.15am-noon.

The next stop is the Tarbert Rally Park, where the baton is due at about 3.30pm, with a celebration event from 2pm-4pm.

Afterwards, the baton relay heads for Butt of Lewis lighthouse at about 5.55pm, with an event taking place at Lionel Spors Nis from 3pm-6.30pm.

There will be an evening celebration in Stornoway at Perceval Square from 6.15pm-10pm.

It will include performances by the Commonwealth Youth Circus.

Traffic restrictions will be in place between 6.30pm-10pm at Bayhead Street, Cromwell Street, North Beach Street, Quay Street and Castle Street.

Perceval Square pay and display car park will be shut all day.

Parking areas for the event will be at the Acres car park across from the Comhairle building, the Nicolson Institute and Smith Avenue car park.
