It set off from Inverness early this morning to travel to Fort William, with stops in Drumnadrochit, Fort Augustus and Spean Bridge. The baton has already visited Urquhart Castle on the shores of Loch Ness and is currently in Spean Bridge, where it is visiting the Commando Memorial. It will then be carried to Glenfinnan, before making the journey by steam train to Fort William. It is due to arrive in the Lochaber town at 4.15pm. Throughout the Highland region, the baton has been carried by a varied group of inspirational people, who make a difference to the lives of others. With an astounding 130 nominations, David Sedgwick, who will carry the baton in Glenfinnan, is Scotland’s most nominated baton-bearer. For over 21 years, he worked as a consultant surgeon at Lochaber’s Belford Hospital, eventually retiring in January of this year. He, his wife Frances and six children have contributed to the local youth club for 20 years. Mr Sedgwick also volunteers at local sporting events and has been involved with mountain rescue and numerous charitable organisations.
