Plans to build a block of flats in a conservation area between a former church and manse have been slammed by locals.
A total of 50 objections have been lodged about the proposals for Plockton, with one describing the development as a “bland pastiche” that will damage the look of the area.
However, councillors are being urged to back the plans and will today visit the site on Innes Street, which is the main route into the Western Ross town.
The controversial proposal is to built a two-and-a-half-storey block of flats, filling in a gap between the town’s former Free Church and its associated manse.
Both buildings are now privately used for housing – but residents believe the new build will change the nature of the existing buildings.
Objectors have claimed filling the space between the two existing buildings will damage the character of Innes Street.
They also say attempts to blend the building in with its more established neighbours would make it a “bland pastiche”, damaging the conservation area.
Plockton and Kyle Free Church of Scotland want to build the flats and use the cash from their sale to buy an existing empty church in the town.
The proposals last went before the committee in May, when the decision to hold a site visit was taken.
However, not all members were in favour of a site visit, with Lib Dem councillors Angela MacLean and Drew Millar arguing they would be capable of making a decision based on Google Maps.
The committee will visit the site at 11am before heading to Plockton High School to make their decision.
