A Lochaber village rang with the skirl of the pipes today when around 70 pipers and drummers from Canada and the United States gave the first performance of their 2014 tour of Scotland.
Can-Am Pipes and Drums was paying a return visit to Glencoe to entertain locals and visitors and to give members of the band an opportunity to visit the Massacre Memorial.
The band, which was formed in 2009, is based in Bowmanville, Ontario, but is joined by members from other provinces in Canada and the United States.
It paraded through the village and played a lament at the war memorial before staging a concert outside the Glencoe Heritage Trust office in the village.
Ros MacDonald, of Glencoe Heritage Trust, said the trust was delighted when the band got in touch to say in wanted to return to the village.
She said: “When they were here in 2012, it rained all day, but they still liked it so much that they wanted to come back.
“And this time, everything came together for us – the weather was beautiful and at least 200 locals and visitors turned out to hear them play.
“They all commented on how much better the weather was this time and they are planning to come back again.”
Mrs MacDonald that chairs were set up in a lay by near Bridge of Coe for more than 20 residents from Abbeyfield House Care Home in Ballachulish who were taken to the village for the event.
She said: “It was a very successful day. The band was awesome. It really stirred the heartstrings.
“It was lovely to see the old folk there enjoying it so much and people just sitting on the grass listening to the music”
Band members are staying in Carrbridge and will be performing at Inverness Highland Games tomorrow.
