Oban’s famous racing driver Susie Wolff is helping to raise cash for the charity that saves lives at sea.
Her silver race suit, racing shoes, two autographed racing shirts – and a miniature model helmet – are to go under the hammer at an RNLI charity auction.
The auction, which is being organised by Oban Lifeboat fundraisers, is being held during the RNLI’s first Glasgow fundraising ball at the Hilton Hotel on Friday September 12.
The racing star comes from Oban and her mother, Sally Stoddart, said: “Susie grew up next to the water realising how important the services of the lifeboat are.”
Mrs Wolff now lives in Switzerland, with her husband Toto Wolff, but her mother said: “Although she has travelled around, she has fond memories of Oban, the people have been so good to her.”
She wore the racing suit and shoes in the DTM racing series, which she competed in from 2006 to 2012. The collector’s items are expected to raise well over £1,000.
Lorraine Kelly has donated a beautiful Catwalk Diva dress and a pair of high heeled shoes, specially created for Dundee’s bid to become a city of culture, which she wore on TV.
And Dame Helen Mirren agreed to a request from the auction organisers to create a unique memento of the 2014 BAFTAs.
The star has handwritten, in glittering gold ink, the words from The Tempest that she recited during her BAFTA fellowship acceptance speech in February. The unique memento will be auctioned along with a limited edition book of the 2010 filming of The Tempest, which she starred in, and a signed photo of Dame Helen.
Other auction items include a limited edition signed framed giclee print of Jack Vettriano’s Dance Me To The End
Of Love, worth £775, which has been donated by Heartbreak Publishing and the artist. Fellow Scots painter
Jolomo, and renowned otter sculptor Laurence Broderick are among other RNLI supporters who have promised
to donate auction items.
Andy Murray has donated a signed DVD of the US Open.
Lynsey Anderson, RNLI community fundraising manager, who is organising the ball, said the response to the auction had been amazing.
