Judges have selected a shortlist of six Gaelic books as contenders for this year’s Donald Meek Award.
Established by the Gaelic Books Council, the accolade was introduced to encourage both new and experienced writers in the language.
It is named after a former chairman of the council, who devoted his professional life to promoting Gaelic literature.
The authors, and their books, vying for the 2014 prize are Norman Campbell – Sgeulachdan sa Chiaradh, Alison Lang – An Aisling, Martin MacIntyre – Cala Bendita’s a Bheannachdan, Norma MacLeod – An Dosan, Christine Stone – As a’ Bhùth ‘s an Tac an Teine, and John Urquhart – Breab-Cridhe.
A reception will be held at the Party Pavilion, Charlotte Square, as part of the Edinburgh Book Festival, next Thursday, where the winner will be announced.
Meanwhile, two further awards have been created, with the support of Bòrd na Gà idhlig, First Book, and Highly Commended.
