Works to prevent landslides on a notorious Argyll road will be discussed at a conference next month.
The A83 Tarbet to Campbeltown road, a main artery into the county, has been closed by landslides at the Rest and Be Thankful hill pass many times over the years.
In three years Transport Scotland has spent £7.5million to mitigate the effects of landslides at the Rest, including sensors on the hillside, netting, drainage works and the building of an emergency diversion road.
Other areas along the A83 have been identified as at high risk from landslides, including Cairndow, Glen Kinglas and Loch Shira, and further work is to take place in these areas.
Transport Scotland will deliver a presentation to Argyll and Bute Council about these works at the council headquarters on Monday, September 8.
The meeting will also consider improvement works planned by Transport Scotland on the A82 Inverness to Glasgow road between Tarbet and Inverarnan.
Jim Smith, head of roads and amenity services at Argyll and Bute Council, told members of the environment, development and infrastructure committee this week: “Transport Scotland is coming to the council chamber on September 8 to update us about the work they are doing at the landslide area and also general improvements.
“They will also speak about the proposals to upgrade the A82 between Tarbet and Inverarnan at Pulpit Rock. They will give more details about the preferred route.
“We have been in discussions with Transport Scotland regarding contingency arrangements while the works take place. We welcome the opportunity to work closely with Transport Scotland taking a partnership approach.
“This is a good opportunity for members to engage with Transport Scotland and hear more about the works they are proposing.”
