William Sichel, 60, completed the Sri Chinmoy Self Transcendence race in New York in a time of 50 days 15 hours six minutes and four seconds. He has now run further in a single, measured race than any other Scottish or British athlete, or anyone aged above 60. In doing this Mr Sichel has set over 50 records at the Scottish Over 60, Scottish Overall, British Over 60, British Overall and World Over 60 levels. The race involves runners negotiating 5,649 laps of one extended city block in Jamaica, Queens, and it has to be completed in 52 days. Finishing in sixth place overall for men, he is the first person aged above 60 ever to complete this incredible challenge. He hopes to highlight the benefits of exercise for the over 60s as well as raise money for the Clan cancer support charity.
