A Uist man is the winner of the first Edwin Morgan Award for Scottish poets aged 30 or under.
Niall Campbell, who was born on South Uist, won the accolade for his first collection Moontide, which was published earlier this year.
Now living in Edinburgh, he picked up the award and the £20,000 cash prize during a ceremony at the city’s International Book Festival at the weekend.
Created by the trustees of the Edwin Morgan Trust, the new award has instantly become the largest poetry prize in the UK.
Poets Stewart Conn and Jen Hadfield, who judged contenders for the competition, both praised Mr Campbell’s entry.
Mr Conn said: “These poems, with their rich textures, succulent descriptions and seductive cadences reveal a gifted wordsmith – they transform the sea-bound Uist they celebrate.”
