Construction of Oban’s new high school is likely to begin in September next year.
The new school will be built on the site of the existing one – which is at 96% capacity – in Soroba Road, and on neighbouring ground at Dalintart and Glencruitten.
The Scottish Government has agreed, in principle, to fund 66% of the cost under its Schools for the Future programme.
Argyll and Bute Council’s policy and resources committee was updated on the progress of the £30million development by project officer Mike Casey.
He told councillors: “Construction will take 18-24 months. We would hope that the school would be occupied for August 2017.”
The committee authorised Douglas Hendry, executive director of customer services, to take steps to secure vacant possession of land currently used as horse grazing at Dalintart Farm.
The ground is to be used for a sports facility for the school.
