Former Liberal Democrat Charles Kennedy has said that Skye and the Small Isles must not be left out of plans to devolve powers to the islands.
The Highland MP said that the northern and Western Isles had “played an absolute blinder” in campaigning for more responsibilities in recent years.
The campaign has led to the Scotland Office issuing a new “islands framework” to ensure they are kept at the forefront of government thinking.
Mr Kennedy, who represents Ross, Skye and Lochaber, said that Skye and the Inner Hebrides must be included.
He said: “The communities of the northern and Western Isles have played an absolute blinder.
“They have rightfully secured a promise of more powers in the event of a Yes or No vote.
“This debate is about a simple theme – that those who care most about the future of their communities are those who live in their communities, and they should decide their future.”
