A man was in a “serious but stable” condition in hospital last night after being badly injured in a crash in Argyll.
His Mazda car left the A828 Connel-Benderloch road north of Oban and hit a tree.
The 49-year-old was rescued from his car as paramedics, the fire brigade and police officers worked side-by-side.
Fire crews used hydraulic cutting equipment to free him. The road was closed for a number of hours after the accident around 7.20pm on Thursday.
Police are appealing for witnesses following the one-vehicle accident.
It happened near the Tralee caravan site at Ledaig.
The driver was taken by ambulance to Lorn and Islands Hospital at Oban and later transferred to the Southern General Hospital in Glasgow.
A fire service spokesman said: “Ambulance control notified us they had received reports of a car striking a tree, so we immediately mobilised two appliances from Oban Community Fire Station.
“In consultation with the ambulance team who were treating the casualty, firefighters removed the vehicle’s roof to create the space needed for him to be safely lifted clear.
“Our crews continued to assist ambulance colleagues and made the vehicle safe, while police officers ensured the safety of the public, the casualty and their fellow emergency responders by controlling traffic and maintaining access to and from the scene.”
Meanwhile, a woman was taken to hospital after a crash between a car and a van near Inverness yesterday.
It happened just before 10.30am on the B9090 Inverness-Nairn road, near Cawdor, at Clephanton Bridge.
Police and ambulance crews were sent to the scene and traffic was disrupted for about an hour.
An ambulance spokeswoman confirmed the woman was taken to Raigmore Hospital with minor injuries.
