Plans to reduce the speed limit on the A830 Road to the Isles in Lochaber – including a crossing that forms part of the Great Glen Way – have been welcomed by local residents.
Scottish Ministers have announced plans to impose new 30mph, 40mph and part-time 20mph limits between Lochybridge and Corpach, near Fort William, to improve road safety.
The proposals involve extending the existing 30mph speed limit at Blar Mhor to the west to include the roundabout and pedestrian crossing constructed for the proposed Tesco store and the new police and ambulance stations.
They also intend to reduce the speed limit on the A830 between the western end of this extension to the 30mph limit and the start of the 30mph limit at Corpach from 60mph to 40mph.
This includes the swing bridge across the Caledonian Canal at Banavie, where people walking the Great Glen Way cross the busy trunk road.
And they want to impose a part-time 20mph speed limit on the section of the A830 close to Lochaber High School.
Councillor Bill Clark, Caol and Mallaig, said: “The community will be delighted with these changes as local people have been campaigning for the speed limits to be reduced for sometime.
“If it makes the road safer then I’m all for it.”
He added that he was particularly pleased the existing 60mph speed limit on the swing bridge across the Caledonian Canal would be reduced to 40mph.
Mr Clark said: “The bridge is particularly dangerous, both for pedestrians crossing the road there and for motorists coming out of the Camaghael turning.”
