A car park in Oban town centre has been completely submerged following heavy rain.
Around 20 cars which were left in Argyll and Bute Council’s Lochavullin car park overnight on Monday into Tuesday are thought to be written off.
The nearby Black Linn burn burst its banks spilling water into the car park, leaving the cars sitting in 4ft of water.
Water also covered Lochavullin road, blocking off the nearby Tesco superstore to vehicles.
Most of the cars are owned by visitors to the town. The Gordon family from Buckinghamshire discovered their Toyota Prius at 7.30am.
Dominique Gordon said: “We were going to go to one of the islands but decided not to when we saw the weather.
“We came into town for a curry last night. My husband Iain parked the car here so he could have a glass of wine and we walked back to the guest house. Then this morning at breakfast I heard one of the women saying that the car park near Tescos was flooded.
“the majority of people who left cars here were tourists.
“The insurance company said most of the cars are likely to be write-offs, because they will be water damaged. Most of our stuff is in the guest house, but we did have coats, books and I-pods in the car.
“We were speaking to some of the locals, who said they haven’t seen anything like this in 54 years.”
A spokesman for Argyll and Bute Council said: “Due to very heavy rainfall the Black Lynn burn burst its banks, leading to the Lochavullin car park flooding.
“The tide has now turned but there has been little change in the level of water in the Black Lynn. We are arranging for pumps to be brought in to pump out the car park as soon as practicable.”
