The drivers of two cars are in a stable condition in hospital following a head-on crash near Oban.
Police are appealing for any witnesses to contact them.
A silver Astra being driven by an 82-year-old woman and a silver Toyota being driven by a 63-year-old man collided at the Wide-Mouthed Frog, Dunbeg, on the A85 Oban to Perth road yesterday.
The crash happened at 4pm and the road was closed until 7.15pm, causing considerable tailbacks into Oban, police said.
Both casualties had to be freed from their vehicles by fire service rescue crews from Oban.
They were taken to Lorn and Islands Hospital, Oban, by ambulance.
The woman suffered injuries to her arm and the man had abdominal injuries.
Inspector Julie McLeish of Oban Police Station said: “The woman was later transferred to the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley suffering from an arm injury. Both are in a stable condition.
“Inquiries are continuing. Could any witnesses to the crash please contact PC Stuart Campbell at Oban road policing on 101.”
Firefighters and ambulance crews worked side-by-side to free both drivers from their vehicles as police officers ensured the safety of the public and the rescue crews.
Fire service incident commander, Station Manager Mark Leathem, said: “Firefighters from Oban reached the scene within around seven minutes of being mobilised following a call from the police.
“The crews and our ambulance colleagues immediately moved to assist the two motorists still inside their cars.
“A woman was removed from one of the vehicles on the advice of ambulance personnel and firefighters deployed hydraulic rescue equipment to create space for the man to be safely released.
“This involved removing the posts and door to allow him to be lifted clear on a rescue board.
“Both casualties were taken to Lorne and Islands Hospital.”
