‘She always put young people first’: Tributes to ‘exceptional’ Western Isles head teacher who died suddenly

Jane MacIntyre taught at Daliburgh School for more than 30 years.

Tributes have been paid to an “exceptional” head teacher who dedicated over three decades to a single school in the Outer Hebrides.

Jane MacIntyre, who died suddenly on Sunday, had taught at Daliburgh School on South Uist over 30 years and had been head teacher for the past four years.

Western Isles Council’s head of education, Donald Macleod, said: “Jane was an exceptional head teacher and an exceptional person, but very modest and understated. She always put young people first and was humble about her own achievements, which were considerable.

“We would like to pass on our sincerest and deepest condolences to her family and friends.”

‘Overwhelming kindness’ of community

After falling ill suddenly on Saturday, Mrs MacIntyre was flown from the Western Isles to hospital in Glasgow, where she died.

Mrs MacIntyre began her teaching career at Daliburgh School in August 1986 and her entire service was at the school.

She had studied at Aberdeen University from 1981 to 1984 and then completed her post-graduate degree at Aberdeen College of Education from 1985 to 1986.

Her funeral will take place on Saturday at noon. The hearse will then go to Daliburgh School before going on for interment at Hallan Cemetery.

The family has requested that only immediate family join the procession to the school, after which anyone who wishes to join can do so at the Borrodale Hotel.

A family statement said: “There will be a collection in the church, all money raised will go to Daliburgh School as this was such a huge part of her life.

“We just want to thank absolutely everyone for their overwhelming kindness and support through this difficult time.”

She is survived by her husband Angus, daughters Paula, Sarah, Shona and Emma, grand-daughter Murren.
