Would-be lumberjacks are invited to get into the festive spirit by cutting down unwanted trees in the shadow of Ben Nevis in return for a Christmas tree to take home.
The Nevis Landscape Partnership Programme is a five-year £3.9million scheme aimed at encouraging the public to get involved with the natural and cultural environment of both Ben and Glen Nevis.
And it has teamed up with Forestry Commission Scotland for the event on Saturday December 13.
A spokeswoman for the partnership said: “As part of our pinewood restoration project, we need to clear non-native species that are endangering our home grown Glen Nevis trees.
“It just so happens they make pretty good Christmas trees.”
She explained that the clearance work formed part of a five-year restructuring programme.
She said: “Forestry Commission Scotland will be upgrading the current woodland of Glen Nevis to allow Scots pine and other native species to naturally regenerate.
“This will increase biodiversity and allow endangered species, such as red squirrel, black grouse and chequered skipper, to thrive.
And the commission’s environment forester, Henry Dobson, said: “I’m delighted that providing folk with Christmas trees from Glen Nevis is going to help restore this ancient pinewood.
“Thinning out the non-native trees will give the natural woodland plenty of space to breathe.”
The event will be held at Glen Nevis Visitor Centre between 10am and 2pm, but anyone wishing to volunteer as a lumberjack should contact the partnership at info@nevispartnership.co.uk to book their place.
Meanwhile, the National Trust for Scotland is inviting people to attend an event – billed as “the ultimate Christmas experience” – in Glencoe on Sunday December 7.
It is offering them an opportunity to join the rangers to pick their very own Christmas tree in the beautiful An Torr woodland between 2pm and 3pm.
A spokesman for the trust said: “You’ll be helping to remove Sitka Spruce to preserve the habitat of the area whilst enjoying a special day out for all the family.”
There will also be a craft session on making tree decorations at Glencoe Visitor Centre from 11am to 1pm the same day.
