Moray Council claims the taxi trade initially backed medical reports on the grounds of public safety, but last night drivers said they believed the new policy was unnecessary.
A proposal for a 25% increase in Western Isle taxis fares has been put forward.
Maximum daytime weekday fares could increase but the price of weekend and overnight hires would stay the same, under planned changes.
In effect, the present weekend rate would become the norm – with a single flat rate charged all the time apart from public holidays.
The majority of taxi drivers who responded to a Western Isles Council review said they wanted fares be altered.
The local authority will now carry out a public consultation with a view to increasing the maximum rates from March.
